Manchester United have reportedly been contacted by Atletico Madrid over a deal for Mason Greenwood. The forward is said to be attracting interest from a whole host of clubs after starring during a loan spell with Getafe, and United could see a number of offers put forward in exchange for his services.
Greenwood progressed through the United academy and was handed his first-team debut during the second leg of the Red Devils’ last 16 Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019. He went on to bag 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 appearances for United but was suspended by the club following accusations made against him.
After being charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in October 2022, the prosecution was ultimately discontinued in February 2023. United then decided to ship him off on loan following an internal investigation.
Greenwood has impressed since moving to Spain and has racked up five goals and four assists in 15 appearances for Getafe.

According to Marca, Atletico are one of the teams interested in signing the 22-year-old, with the club already holding initial talks with United. And sporting director Andrea Berta is reportedly taking ‘steps towards a future signing’.
The Sun have reported that Barcelona will offer the Red Devils £40million to land Greenwood next summer, with Valencia and Real Sociedad also interested in securing his signature. And a source told the publication: “Barcelona are hugely interested in Greenwood, and are determined to bring him in.
“Right now, they are leading the race and are at the front of the queue. Scouts have watched Greenwood and have been tasked with deciding if he fits in with Barcelona’s style of play. The overwhelming view is that he does, and that he would be a strong addition to the squad.”
A source also stated: “Mason has done brilliantly since he moved to Spain and is really catching the eye after a strong start to his time at Getafe. There are a number of clubs looking at him in Spain with scouts from Valencia and Sociedad seemingly at the front of the queue.
“It is highly unlikely Mason will return to Manchester United. That ship has sailed, and he looks set to enjoy the next phase of his career in Spain where he has really settled and found his feet both personally and professionally. He owes a huge debt to Getafe for the help and support they have given him, and it’s possible he could make his move there permanent at the end of the season.
“But if he carries on playing like he is, other bids and offers are likely to come in, leaving Mason, and the club, with a decision to make. After a very difficult year or so Mason feels like his career is on the up.”
