Clubs across world football will now be looking ahead to the January transfer window to conduct more business in the market as the season continues to tick along.
With players on expiring contracts able to negotiate Bosman transfers with European sides from January 1, clubs will need to start preparing for exits in the coming months.
Furthermore, with injuries hitting multiple clubs so far this season and players such as Ivan Toney likely to be on the market, the January window is set to be as chaotic as this summer.
Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk were the high-profile additions at Stamford Bridge, while Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto, Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana also joined the club.
The 2022-23 winter transfer window also saw Liverpool move to sign Cody Gakpo from under the noses of Manchester United, and the Red Devils themselves sign Wout Weghorst on loan.
Furthermore, Cristiano Ronaldo completed a move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr following his release from Man Utd in November.
European sides can also start negotiating with players who will be free agents in the summer of 2024, with some big names able to agree moves from January.
Premier League clubs, however, cannot approach other English top flight players until the final month of their deals, meaning some players could be snapped up by teams in Europe.
Kylian Mbappe is the biggest name whose contract is due to expire in 2024. The France international has informed Paris Saint-Germain that he will not sign an extension, opening the door for a free transfer move to Real Madrid, but a move will be complicated amid Premier League interest and Jude Bellingham’s new-found stardom at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Adrien Rabiot, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are among several other top stars who are also set to become free agents next summer, if they don’t sign a contract extension.
