The Saudi Pro League took the transfer market by storm in 2023 and it appears as if this will continue during the January transfer window of 2024.

Saudi Arabia is the nouveau riche league of world football, with a host of world-class players moving to the Kingdom for astronomical fees and on massive wages in 2023.

These included the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Sadio Mane, Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez, Malcom, Ruben Neves and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Saudi Pro League’s pursuit of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is set to continue in 2024. Al-Ittihad tried to sign the Egyptian in the summer of 2023 for a world record fee and they will try again in 2024. A move in January will be difficult but not impossible if the money is right.

The first transfer of the January 2024 window was a minor one as Mo Adams moved to Al Khaleej from Al-Shabab for an undisclosed fee.

The latest big names to be tipped to move to Saudi Arabia are Man Utd midfielders Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes. Out of the two, the Brazilian seems more likely in January.

There is also the possibility of big names playing in Saudi Arabia leaving the kingdom. Al-Hilal‘s Ruben Neves is one such player who has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League.

Al-Ahli’s Gabri Veiga is another who is reportedly looking to return to his homeland of Spain. He has disappointed since rejecting a transfer to Italian champions Napoli in order to move to Saudi Arabia.

Veiga’s teammate Roberto Firmino could also be on the way out. The Liverpool legend has failed to live up to the hype and could make the switch to a different team in the league or return to Europe.

The 2023-24 January window opens its doors on Monday, 1 January 2024 and is expected to close on Thursday, 1 February.

However, the Saudi Pro League’s summer transfer window was open for a week longer than in Europe, meaning clubs may have longer to complete deals in January too.
