Man Utd face £120m loss on Mason Greenwood if Sir Jim Ratcliffe makes transfer decision | Football | Sport

Manchester United will suffer a gut-wrenching loss on Mason Greenwood if Sir Jim Ratcliffe sanctions a permanent transfer away in the summer. Greenwood is gradually restoring his worth on loan at Getafe, but United would unlikely receive anything near to the value he boasted as he burst onto the senior scene.

The 22-year-old had the world at his feet after breaking into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team plans at Old Trafford.

His development stalled in January 2022, when he played his last United game before his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.

Greenwood denied all of the charges, which the Crown Prosecution Service dropped last February due to a withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light.

The CPS announced there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” before then-United chief executive Richard Arnold claimed he was satisfied that Greenwood was clear of any wrongdoing.

He had registered 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 United appearances before the age of 20 and was subsequently one of world football’s highest-valued stars.

In June 2021, the CIES Football Observatory named Greenwood the second most valuable footballer on the planet, worth a staggering £152million.

Only Manchester City ace Phil Foden’s £164m valuation was higher, with Marcus Rashford (£138m) in third and Bruno Fernandes (£133m) in fifth on either side of Erling Haaland (£134m).

Greenwood’s 18-month absence and the fact his United contract expires in the summer of 2025 have taken a chunk out of his value.

According to The Sun, Barcelona are ready to table a £40m bid for the Bradford-born goalscorer and offer him Lionel Messi’s iconic No 10 shirt as a sweetener.

The La Liga giants are reportedly joined by Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, among other heavyweights, in circling Greenwood while he gets back up to speed on loan at Getafe.

Greenwood has scored five goals and provided four assists in 15 appearances for the Spanish outfit, helping them to a strong campaign so far.
