Man Utd news: Timo Werner transfer ‘stance’ emerges as Erik ten Hag eyes up Chelsea flop | Football | Sport

Only relegation strugglers Sheffield United and Burnley have managed fewer than the Red Devils’ 22 Premier League goals this campaign. Rasmus Hojlund has failed to hit the ground running since his £72million move from Atalanta, while Marcus Rashford is miles off the form he showed in 2022/23.

Having survived several periods of pressure on his position in the dugout, Ten Hag reportedly wants winter reinforcements to give United more firepower at the business end of the pitch.

According to The Mirror, Werner has made the shortlist, and the German could be swayed towards a return to England only 18 months after bidding farewell to Stamford Bridge.

Werner’s formidable Bundesliga strike rate between 2016 and 2020 prompted Chelsea to fork out £47m for his signature. But the 27-year-old failed to repay the Londoners, producing 10 Premier League goals in two seasons before heading back to Germany.

Injuries have stifled Werner’s momentum this campaign, with only two Bundesliga starts and two goals to his name. But Ten Hag is thought to be keen on the energy he brings to the front-line, which helped Chelsea win the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel.

Loan deals are likely to be the way forward for United in January, with Financial Fair Play regulations set to keep the club on a tight leash. Offloading big earners such as Jadon Sancho could give Ten Hag some extra breathing room.

The Red Devils’ new part-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, will reportedly be consulted over major January transfer decisions despite the fact his buy-in has not yet been ratified by the Premier League.
