Ange Postecoglou gives update on Bayern-linked Eric Dier as Tottenham absence explained | Football | Sport

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has insisted Eric Dier was absent for his side’s FA Cup third round clash with Burnley due to an injury. The defender has struggled to get in the Spurs team since the Australian took charge in the summer and has reportedly reached an agreement in principle to sign for Bayern Munich.

“He’s injured, he got injured at training yesterday,” Postecoglou told ITV after being quizzed about Dier’s absence. The manager then said he knew “absolutely zero” about the player’s links to Bayern and added: “Eric didn’t train yesterday, he was injured so he’s not selected.”

Dier has been a key man for Tottenham over the last few years and started 31 Premier League matches last season. But the 29-year-old has featured just four times in the top-flight this campaign and has only started one of those games.

According to The Times, Dier and Bayern have reached an agreement in principle over a move to the Allianz Arena. And the transfer could go ahead this month.

Postecoglou is currently struggling with an injury crisis at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and was forced to name Emerson Royal in the centre of defence for the visit of Burnley on Friday night. The Brazil international usually plays at right-back but is currently viewed as back-up to Pedro Porro, who came up with the winning goal against the Clarets.

Spurs were far from their best in their latest encounter as they struggled to find a route to goal. But with 12 minutes remaining, Porro lashed in a screamer from long-range to bag his side a spot in the FA Cup fourth round. The Lilywhites may now see the competition as their best chance of silverware this season after falling six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool in the top-flight table. Postecoglou’s men didn’t qualify for Europe this season after finishing eighth in the league last time around and exited the Carabao Cup following a second round defeat to Fulham in August.

Meanwhile, Arsenal hero Ian Wright believes a move to Germany would be good for Dier, who has been capped 49 times by England and starred for the Three Lions at Euro 2016 and at the 2018 World Cup.

“At this stage of his career, he’s struggling to get into the Tottenham side so to get linked with Bayern Munich is something that….if it is rumours you hope for his sake it might be true because it doesn’t look like he can get a sniff at the moment,” the ex-striker told ITV.
