Wrexham co-chairman Ryan Reynolds’ jubilation was clear as fellow Hollywood superstar captured his reaction to the Red Dragons’ latest FA Cup win. The North Wales outfit are into the fourth round after beating local rivals Shrewsbury Town in a close away encounter.
It seems that Wrexham co-owner Reynolds thoroughly enjoyed the team’s hard-fought 1-0 win over their cross-border enemies. Despite being the underdogs on the day, the visitors brought the game to their League One opponents and were rewarded for their efforts in the second half.
Midfielder Tom O’Connor eventually earned Wrexham the bragging rights after dispatching a strike past Shewsbury’s goalkeeper in the 72nd minute. Ultimately, the Irishman’s deflected shot was all the Dragons needed to earn their passage into the next round of the cup.
Defying the pre-match odds, the North Wales club earned yet another impressive result in the cup, following on from their heroics last season. Unsurprisingly, his winning-goal led to rapturous scenes in the away end and it appears that Wrexham’s world famous owners also joined in with the celebrations.
The Holllywood titans sat down to watch Wrexham in action versus Shrewsbury, with Reynolds first taking to Instagram to post a snap of him watching the game with fellow A-Lister Jackman. In his typically goofy style, he referred to Jackman’s previous role in 2012 blockbuster ‘Les Miserables’, saying: “Watching @Wrexham_afc in the @emiratesfacup with Prisoner 24601.”
Eventually, Jackman responded after the game as he duly posted a picture of his actor friend clutching his wrists as he celebrated the team’s victory. In that instance, the ‘Wolverine’ legend captioned the picture of Reynolds by jubilantly saying: “Huge! Round 4.”
Co-chairman Rob McElhenney also failed to hide his delight as he took to Twitter/X to confirm he had celebrated the crucial away win wildly. Quoting a post which showed the Red Dragons’ fans jubliantly cheering following the winner from hero O’Connor, he admitted: “You should’ve seen my living room.”
Their fired up responses were mirrored by the Welsh club’s players also, with midfielder Elliot Lee also issuing a barbed dig towards Shrewsbury defender Tom Flanagan. The Northern Ireland international seemingly caused a stir in the Wrexham dressing room with some of his comments prior to the local derby.
Speaking with glee after the National League champions booked their place in the fourth round, Lee told S4C: “We knew as a team the importance of the game. They’re a big physical team and, being a local rivalry, it was always going to be a great game and I thought the boys were outstanding.
“It was a great performance and I’d like to dedicate that to one of their players, Tom Flanagan, who said that we were full of semi-pro players last year,” the Racecourse Ground favourite said as he basked in his team’s victory, adding: “So that one’s for you, mate!”
