Man Utd chiefs ‘talking about’ £43m striker whose club may be forced into sale | Football | Sport

Manchester United chiefs have ‘internally discussed’ the possibility of bringing Lille striker Jonathan David to Old Trafford, according to reports. David has been linked with a move away from Lille for a number of years, with his prolific form in France said to have attracted plenty of interest from across Europe.

The Canadian forward has bagged 10 goals in all competitions so far this season, leading to renewed speculation that he could soon depart Lille for bigger and better things. United have already discussed the possibility of moving for his signature, according to 90min, with the Red Devils thought to be long-term admirers.

It is said that Lille could be forced to sell David in the summer, given that his contract is set to expire in 2025. It leaves them with a dilemma over whether to cash in or risk losing him on a free transfer, with David free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a non-French club from next January.

The report adds that although Erik ten Hag is eager to strengthen his forward line, United are prioritising outgoings and will find it difficult to move decisively in the winter market. It means that David, who is valued at £43million by Transfermarkt, is more likely to be targeted in the summer when the Red Devils will have a better opportunity to strike a deal with Lille.

David recently suggested that he might struggle to turn down an offer from the Premier League in a clear hint that he would be open to joining United. Speaking last month, he said: “In England, when I watch the matches, everything is full each time. As a player, it motivates you even more.

“I don’t know, I think it’s possible, very possible. I don’t know if I can find myself anywhere other than the Premier League. It could well be the Premier League. It’s a very nice atmosphere.”

David also spoke of his desire to play in England when quizzed on his future at the World Cup two years ago, saying: “What happens after I do not know, we will have to see. The Premier League is the best league in the world and I think every player would want to play there some day.”

United are thought to be considering a number of potential striker targets, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting said to be another name on their list of players to pursue. The Red Devils also reportedly enquired about the possibility of signing Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig before the former Chelsea man joined Tottenham earlier this week.
