Man Utd news: Target admits snubbing Erik ten Hag despite offer to ‘multiply his salary’ | Football | Sport

Manchester United transfer target Brian Brobbey has come clean on his decision to reject Erik ten Hag when the former Ajax boss first arrived at Old Trafford. The striker is reportedly being tracked by Red Devils recruitment specialists after making a superb start to the season in the Eredivisie.

Brobbey is on course for the best individual campaign of his career, racking up 12 goals in 24 matches across all competitions thus far. The 21-year-old has been a bright spark in an otherwise disappointing few months for Ajax, who remain well off the pace in the Netherlands.

His impressive performances have alerted United who, according to The Mirror, are keeping track of the player’s situation with a view to making a move this summer. But Brobbey claims to have rejected the Red Devils in the past.

Ten Hag is believed to have contacted the youngster when he first landed the job at Old Trafford, but Brobbey deemed it right to continue at Ajax despite the promise of a lucrative contract in the Premier League.

“Manchester United wanted me, but I really wanted to return to Ajax permanently,” Brobbey told De Telegraaf. “To make this possible, my agent Jose Fortes Rodriguez even waived his hefty resale percentage.

“Erik ten Hag called me and at United Jose could get his millions of euros and I could earn a multiple of my Ajax salary. But our decision was made: we wanted to go to Ajax.”

“We consider everything,” explained the 53-year-old. “So what is in the best interests of the players and also the best interests for us, the team, for Manchester United. So we’ll see how we progress during the window.

“We have to get the best performance and best results with the players available and that’s what we’re trying to do. I think there will be some players that are hopeful they can be back for the [Tottenham game this] weekend.”
