Chelsea have been told by Premier League icon Alan Shearer that they are in need of three new players. And the ex-Newcastle striker has admitted he’s confused about how a club can spend so much money and still need reinforcements. The Blues have suffered a torrid time on the pitch since Todd Boehly bought the club but have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes over recent weeks.
Boehly bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich at the end of May 2022 after the Russian oligarch was forced to put the club on the market following his country’s attack on Ukraine. Boehly has since spent over £1billion to bring in a whole host of players.
Boehly spent £107million to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, before splashing out a fee that could rise to £115m in exchange for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo. And the American has also spent mega money on the likes of Cole Palmer, Wesley Fofana and Raheem Sterling, while also landing goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from Brighton.
But Shearer told The Rest is Football podcast: “I still can’t work out how you can spend that much money and still need a goalkeeper maybe, still need a centre-half, and definitely need a centre forward. But three wins, a little bit better – but I wouldn’t get too excited.”
Former Chelsea managers Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter were both sacked by the five-time Premier League champions last season, with Mauricio Pochettino taking the reins in the summer following an interim period with ex-Blues midfielder and boss Frank Lampard at the helm.
Pochettino won just five of his first 15 Premier League matches this season as his side dropped to 12th in the table. But the west London giants have climbed up to ninth in recent weeks after winning four of their last five matches.
Chelsea have been tipped to delve into the transfer market once again this month as Pochettino attempts to propel his team into the European places before the end of the campaign.
And ahead of the Blues’ Carabao Cup semi-final first leg showdown with Middlesbrough last week, the ex-Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager explained: “We are assessing the squad as always. We had a conversation with the owners and sporting directors yesterday and today. We are looking, like all the teams, at options or opportunities.
“But I am very positive and happy with the squad. We are working and if something appears, we will announce it. But at the moment, we are assessing and working normally, as we have from the beginning of the season.”
