Erik ten Hag is eyeing his latest Ajax reunion at Manchester United by signing Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt this summer, according to reports. De Ligt could be on his way out of the Allianz Arena at the end of the season, and Ten Hag has already brought three of his former students to Manchester.
United are expected to prioritise a new centre-back in the summer, as well as a striker, with Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans currently set to leave on free transfers.
The Red Devils have been linked with a handful of names ahead of a defensive overhaul, including Jarrad Branthwaite, Jean-Clair Todibo and Antonio Silva.
De Ligt has now also entered the frame amid suggestions that he isn’t entirely happy with how his career is going at Bayern.
According to Sky Germany, De Ligt is not entirely satisfied with his situation in Bavaria amid a frustrating season thwarted by a knee injury.
The 24-year-old is said to be a popular figure at Bayern, but he isn’t a regular starter under Thomas Tuchel when he has every centre-back at his disposal.
De Ligt has made just seven starts in all competitions this season, and while a winter transfer has been ruled out, a summer switch has been mooted as a possibility.
The report adds that if Ten Hag remains United’s manager ahead of next term, the Netherlands international will feature among his top transfer targets in the first window under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.
Ten Hag has already reunited with ex-Ajax stars Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Andre Onana for a combined £190million.
He has focused other moves on players he is familiar with and felt he could trust, including Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst.
De Ligt could be the latest to join the 53-year-old at Old Trafford. He left Ten Hag’s ranks in Amsterdam for Juventus in a £68m deal in 2019 before leaving for Bayern for the same transfer fee three years later.
