Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp may have to brace himself for laughter down the phone if he pursues a reported transfer target. The club have been linked with a host of players this month, including 18-year-old Swedish starlet Momodou Sonko.
At just 18-years-old, the BK Hacken winger has already made 40 senior appearances for his club, scoring 14 times. And he’s attracted the attention of Europe’s super-powers, with the likes of Barcelona and RB Leipzig also reportedly interested in his signature.
The under-19 international has now opened up on his future, revealing that his friends and family are divided on whether he should push for a move to the Premier League or La Liga. “I have some who are Liverpool fans and some Barca fans,” he told Sportbladet.
“They want me to go to the club they support. It’s kind of funny. I get a lot written to me from my friends. It’s fun at first but it can be too much too.”
Seemingly though, the star isn’t expecting any direct contact from Klopp or Xavi. Pressed on how he’d react if the Liverpool boss was to call his mobile phone, Sonko claims he’d struggle to take it seriously.
“If he were to call privately, I would laugh,” he told Sportbladet. “It is quite unlikely. It is easier for him to reach my agents than me. I haven’t received that call anyway.”
Hacken sporting director Martin Ericsson has previously spoken candidly on the interest in the club’s prized asset, implying he would command a sizeable transfer fee. “The interest is huge,”he told Fotbollskanalen.
“Then it must be said that there have been some other young players who end up in the spotlight in Sweden. But the interest is great, especially considering the size of clubs. Then I think everyone understands that this is no cheap player.”
The forward is currently contracted until 2025, meaning the club are likely to look to cash in this year rather than allow him to enter the final year of his deal. Klopp is also expected to explore the option of an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy.
