Manchester United could reportedly look to sign more British players, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe said to be keen on boosting the club’s homegrown contingent. The Red Devils are eager to invest in players brought up on UK shores, according to The Sun, with their stance likely to see Scott McTominay offered a new deal at Old Trafford.
Express Sport takes a look at four British players who would be more than capable of doing a job for Erik ten Hag…
United have long been credited with an interest in Marc Guehi, who has emerged as one of the best young English defenders in the Premier League during his time at Crystal Palace. Ten Hag is said to be keen on shoring up United’s back line and could do far worse than to pursue a move for Guehi, either now or at the end of the season.
The 23-year-old would prefer to stay at Palace for now in order to boost his chances of making the England squad for this summer’s Euros, according to the Manchester Evening News. However, it remains to be seen if things will change when the campaign draws to a close, which could give United the opportunity to snap him up.
Eberechi Eze is another Palace player with the potential to excel for United, given his rapid rise since joining the Eagles from Queens Park Rangers four years ago. He has managed to break into the England squad thanks to his impressive showings in attack, with the forward having registered 13 goals and six assists over the last two seasons.
Like Guehi, Eze has been linked with a move elsewhere for quite some time and could be a good fit for United if he is eventually targeted by the Red Devils. They have been crying out for a decent winger this season, with Antony and Marcus Rashford failing to provide the goods, and Eze might just be able to offer the perfect solution.
United could reap the rewards of a surprise move for Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke before the January window draws to a close. The former Liverpool man has finally found his feet at the Vitality Stadium and showed United what he is capable of by scoring the first goal in Bournemouth’s win at Old Trafford last month.
Solanke’s imposing presence and obvious finishing ability would make him a clear upgrade on the likes of Anthony Martial, who has offered next to nothing at United for several years. The Red Devils have struggled up top as of late and could really do with a player like Solanke to provide a regular source of goals, with the 26-year-old now on 12 for the season.
Conor Gallagher has recently been tipped to leave Chelsea despite the 23-year-old having been given the armband in the absence of Reece James this season. Tottenham were said to have been monitoring Gallagher’s situation earlier this month, but there has been no movement from north London as of yet.
United could do with some extra depth in the engine room and Gallagher would be able to provide that, with the former Palace loanee also capable of playing further forward when required. However, there are currently more pressing issues for the Red Devils, who are in need of urgent improvement in both attack and defence.
