Thiago Alcantara’s dad has suggested that his son will leave Liverpool this summer, with talks over a contract extension non-existent. The former Bayern Munich man could be one of several stars to seek out new opportunities at the end of the season, when Jurgen Klopp is set to call time on a nine-year stint at Anfield.
Thiago has not made a single competitive appearance for the Reds this season as he continues to grapple with injury issues. The Spaniard has been sidelined with a hip issue since April last year, missing eight months of action.
On his day, Thiago is undoubtedly one of the Reds’ most talented midfielders. But it seems as though his lack of game time, coupled with a hefty pay packet, has seen Liverpool opt against proposing to extend his contract before it expires in June.
That much was made clear by World Cup winner and ESPN Brasil pundit Zinho, who claimed to have been told by his former team-mate Mazinho – Thiago’s dad – that the Reds have made no contact with the player’s entourage over renewing his deal.
The midfield maestro has made just shy of 100 first-team appearances for the Reds since signing from Bayern Munich in a deal worth up to £25million three years ago. And it looks as though his days on Merseyside, and indeed in Europe, may be numbered.
Brazilian outfit Flamengo are rumoured to be interested in Thiago, as well as clubs from the Middle East. The former Spanish international rose through the ranks in Barcelona’s esteemed La Masia academy.
Klopp has presided over a relatively quiet January transfer window, which has so far seen Nat Phillips and Calvin Ramsey recalled from loan spells at Celtic and Preston North End respectively.
Fabio Carvalho and Rhys Williams were also recalled before being sent out on temporary stints with Hull City and Port Vale. It remains to be seen whether the Reds make a push to bring in new bodies before next week’s deadline.
