Amad Diallo has risked becoming the latest Manchester United star to be disciplined by Erik ten Hag due to his social media activity after Sunday’s FA Cup win against Newport County. The 21-year-old winger featured in a matchday squad for the first time this year at Rodney Parade but wasn’t handed any minutes.
Ten Hag took no risks against the League Two side, fielding his strongest side barring Andre Onana, on his way back from the Africa Cup of Nations, and Marcus Rashford, who is claimed to be ill.
Antony replaced the latter alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund in attack, assisting United’s opener and scoring the third in a 4-2 victory.
The Brazilian was by no means convincing, though, and many were left baffled by Ten Hag’s snub of Amad against a team struggling in England’s fourth tier.
Amad has missed almost the whole season through an injury he suffered during United’s pre-season tour of the United States.
He returned to action with a bright substitute cameo in the 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest at the end of last year.
But he then missed the FA Cup third-round win at Wigan Athletic, and the 2-2 Premier League draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
His presence on the bench at Newport was welcomed, but Ten Hag left plenty of supporters disappointed by leaving him on there.
The Dutchman opted for Omari Forson, 19, in the dying embers, and Amad was unsurprisingly among those frustrated by the decision.
On Sunday evening, Amad’s X (formerly Twitter) account showed that he had liked a post slamming his lack of opportunities at United and urging him to return to Sunderland, where he shone on loan last season.
The post read: “Here, Amad Diallo – if they’re not going to start you in the FA Cup away at Newport County, it really really isn’t worth you giving them your time. Come home, come somewhere you are truly appreciated.”
It has since been removed from Amad’s likes. However, the post potentially served as a subtle indicator that the Ivory Coast international felt let down in South Wales.
