Man Utd ‘eye £51m star’ to lead Sir Jim Ratcliffe era despite having bid ‘rejected’ | Football | Sport

Manchester United reportedly remain interested in signing Atalanta star Giorgio Scalvini. The defender has been one of the Serie A’s most impressive centre-backs, and the Red Devils are keen to lure him to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window.

United have endured a poor start to the season, winning just 10 of their opening 21 Premier League matches. Erik ten Hag has been forced to cope with numerous injury problems in every department, though his backline, in particular, has been hit hard by absences.

With the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire spending extended spells on the sidelines, United’s lack of strong defensive depth has been highlighted. The higher powers at the Theatre of Dreams have opted not to try and deal with the matter this month, with defensive signings instead planned for the summer.

According to Calciomercato, Atalanta’s Scalvini is one of United’s top targets to bolster their ranks and they have been impressed by his displays so far this season. The 20-year-old is naturally a centre-back but has also been deployed in a holding midfield role, which will certainly be an attractive attribute to Ten Hag.

Scalvini’s price tag has soared over the past few months and only offers in the region of £51million will be entertained at present. United are expected to invest heavily in the summer transfer window under the watchful eye of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and thus that fee is not out of their reach.

The Red Devils aren’t alone in their interest in the Italy international though as Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid have also shortlisted the impressive prospect as a target for the summer.
