Djurgarden wonderkid Lucas Bergvall has chosen to join Tottenham over Barcelona. In a dramatic turn of events, Bergvall, who was expected to pick Barca, informed the Spanish giants on Thursday night that he has changed his mind and will instead be moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Bergvall is set to undergo his medical with the north Londoners on Friday after the January transfer window slams shut. He will join his new club in the summer after he turns 18.
The Swede visited Tottenham’s training ground on Monday and then went to look around the Catalonians’ facilities. Reports in Spain claimed he favoured a move to Barcelona, however, Tottenham were able to persuade him to join them instead.
According to The Athletic, Bergvall is set to sign a five-year deal with Spurs while he will cost £8.5million plus add-ons. It was initially reported that Djurgarden valued him at around £17m.
Last month, Bergvall made his senior international debut for Sweden during a friendly against Estonia at just 17 years old. He previously captained the under-16 national team and is widely regarded to be one of the most promising young players in Europe right now. Bergvall was previously subject to interest from Juventus, Bayern Munich and Manchester United in 2022.
The one-cap Sweden international visited all three clubs before he completed a move to Djurgarden from Brommapojkarna in December 2022. Speaking at the time Brommapojkarna’s Sporting Director Peter Kisfaludy told FotbollDirekt: “You have to remember that Lucas has been to Manchester United, Juventus, Bayern Munich.
“As said; this is an exceptional talent. His technique and understanding of the game. It is not difficult to understand when you see him that he is the team captain in the U16 national team.”
Last season, Bergvall made 29 appearances for Djurgarden in all competitions, scoring three goals and laying on one assist.
