Chelsea‘s €3.5 million sale of Callum Hudson-Odoi to Nottingham Forest is looking worse by the day.

The 23-year-old has scored in his last two Premier League games, taking his tally to three for the season.

That is the same as Mykhailo Mudryk, who cost The Blues €70m from Shakhtar Donetsk in January last year.

Mudryk has shown promise on occasion at Stamford Bridge but has not come close to justifying the fee paid for him.

His signing had already been very disappointing, yet Hudson-Odoi’s recent form has made it look a whole lot worse.

The west London club effectively swapped the two comparable wingers at a cost of €66.5m.

Not to mention, Hudson-Odoi was a homegrown talent that Blues fans would have loved to see succeed.

Hudson-Odoi’s Chelsea career

Chelsea’s academy has produced several top players in recent years, such as Reece James, Mason Mount, Levi Colwill and Conor Gallagher.

However, none of them came into the first team with higher expectations than Hudson-Odoi.

The tricky winger had shone for years at youth level and made an immediate impact on the senior squad in the 2018-19 season.

He registered five goals and five assists in 12 starts in all competitions at the age of just 18.

Though, he would later rupture his Achilles tendon, keeping him out of action for many months, and he never seemed to recover fully.

It was certainly time for him to move on last summer and the Chelsea board should not be heavily criticised for sanctioning that, but they are at fault for not identifying an upgrade.
