Rangers boss shuts down Celtic questions after Gers move top of table | Football | Sport

Rangers manager Philippe Clement is keeping his focus on the next match rather than getting caught up in the title race with Celtic. Despite Rangers moving to the top of the Scottish Premiership after a win against St Johnstone and Celtic’s draw with Kilmarnock, Clement is not letting the hype distract him.

The Gers won 3-0 at McDiarmid Park on Sunday afternoon thanks to Mohamed Diomande’s first-half strike and a late brace of James Tavernier penalties. But the Belgian boss is in no mood to think about going top of the table as they seek a 56th Scottish title.

When asked about the title race, he told Sky Sports: “It is nothing to do with the ranking. We can only talk about our results and they have been really good until now. We have a really good series of wins now but we can only look to the next game.”

He added: “That is my mentality. That is my character, and I know that is the only way to be when there are other good teams in the league. It’s about the three points and it’s a difficult game in the circumstances, in that we had to play a different kind of football.

“The team is now ready to play different kinds of football comfortably and in a good way. We were never in doubt for one second in the game and that’s a big step forward from a few months ago.”

Celtic drew 1-1 with Kilmarnock 24 hours earlier after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser. Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers admitted: “It has happened too many times over the course of this season. We play well in spells, don’t take our chances and then anxiety creeps in.

“But you have to be able to deal with that pressure. We’ve had enough mishaps throughout the season, so I’m not surprised, if I’m honest.

“It was the same at Kilmarnock before when we were ahead in the game, got pegged back and ended up losing. There’s been others where we haven’t been able to produce a level of performance.

“So I can’t say I’m surprised, that’s my honest answer. I was looking to get through the game off the back of a performance that wasn’t great. But we couldn’t see it through.”
