The 42-year-old Republic of Ireland star won five Premier League titles and the Champions League and was renowned for playing in a number of different positions.

Despite being recognised as a centre-half, he also played both full-back positions and midfield as he became the ultimate utility man while winning 14 major honours with the Red Devils.

Remarkably, O’Shea even kept a clean sheet after going in goal in February 2007 after an injury to keeper Edwin van der Sar in a 4-0 win at Tottenham.

After finishing his playing career with Sunderland and Reading, he has since began coaching and worked with the Royals, Stoke City, Birmingham and Republic of Ireland’s national team and U21s.

Today he was on duty in Dublin to help draw the last-16 of the Europa League in the Irish capital.

He was introduced on to the main stage by the host, who described him as “one of most decorated and versatile players” of all-time.

O’Shea was then asked to stand on the presenter’s left as he explained how “it’s important to have the positioning”.

That led to O’Shea replying tongue-in-cheek: “I’m versatile so I can change.”

The host awkwardly replied: “Very good, very good. I like that.”

Fans sound took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to troll the presenter after his description of the United icon.

One wrote: “Can’t believe John O’Shea has just been described as one of the most versatile and decorated footballers in European history.”

Another said: “Didn’t have hearing John O’Shea as one of the most versatile and decorated players of all time on my list of things I’d hear today.”

A third commented: “‘One of the most decorated and versatile players of all time….John O’Shea’… Oh really, do f*** off.”

While a fourth simply described it as a “bit random”.
