Elis, 28, was stretchered off the pitch after suffering a head injury from an accidental clash with Guingamp’s Donatien Gomis after just 34 seconds.

The game stopped for Elis to receive treatment which lasted for eight minutes while he was surrounded by team-mates, some of whom appeared visibly distressed.

The Honduras international was then taken off the pitch to applause from the crowd.

In a statement on social media, Bordeaux said he was then transported to hospital for treatment and to undergo medical examinations.

French outlet L’Equipe reports the player was conscious on the journey to hospital.

However, according to France radio group France Bleu, Elis suffered “severe head trauma” following the collision.

The outlet also claims Elis was placed into an “induced coma” while being transported.

He is now said to be undergoing treatment from medical teams in Bordeaux with his parents by his side.

Bordeaux went on to win the game 1-0, with manager Albert Riera dedicating the win to Elis.

Taking to social media, he said: “W…+3… dedicated to our pantera Alberth Elis, have a good recovery.

“Applause to you, to the most important of football, to the actors (the players) & the fans (supporters)…this show belongs to you! Both together creates a strong cocktail.”

Midfielder Gaetan Weissbeck also paid tribute to Elis in his post-match interview with the club’s official channel, saying: “We dedicate this victory to Alberth Elis.”

Winger Elis has scored five times in 18 league games for Bordeaux this season.

He started out his career in his homeland with CD Olimpia before moving to Monterrey in Mexico in 2016.

Elis then moved on loan to Houston before completing a permanent move in January 2018.

He then signed for Boavista before signing for Bordeaux on loan which then turned into another permanent transfer.

From Bordeaux he had a loan move to Brest in the second half of last season, but has nailed down a spot for this season at Bordeaux.

He has won 64 caps for the Honduran national team, scoring 13 times.
