Erling Haaland has had a relatively quiet return from injury on the goals front, by his own standards, netting three times in his six appearances in 2024, but that all changed on Tuesday night.

The Norwegian bagged five goals in Manchester City’s 6-2 drubbing of Luton Town in the FA Cup Fifth Round, with Belgian maestro Kevin de Bruyne assisting four of them.

The pair have seldom been fit at the same time so far this season, but they are back for the run-in and if their performance at Kenilworth Road is anything to go by, Man City will score a heap load of goals before the campaign ends.

Haaland opened the scoring after just three minutes, finishing from just outside the six-yard box following a De Bruyne cross. He doubled Man City’s lead and his goals tally in the 18th minute; after excellent hold-up play from a Stefan Ortega long-kick, Haaland laid the ball off for De Bruyne and sprinted into the distance. After one touch to set himself, he slid the ball past Tim Krul to put Man City 2-0 up.

To complete his hat-trick, Haaland once again latched onto a De Bruyne through-ball, finishing past Krul into the far corner.

The Norwegian wasn’t done there, however. He added a fourth with an easy tap-in, after brilliant movement to create space inside the box, before scoring his fifth goal from a Bernardo Silva assist – his first goal of the night not assisted by De Bruyne.

In the process, Haaland became the first player to ever score five goals in a single Champions League game and a single FA Cup game.
