Man Utd have left-field Rasmus Hojlund solution as eight-goal striker offers services | Football | Sport

Manchester United are expected to pursue a new striker this summer to provide Rasmus Hojlund with much-needed competition and replace Anthony Martial. Hojlund has shouldered the goalscoring burden among Erik ten Hag’s forwards throughout his debut season, with Martial plagued with injury issues again.

The 21-year-old has scored 13 goals in all competitions, including eight in his last eight games which has included netting in six consecutive outings.

United appear to have captured a striker with the potential to lead the line for the next decade after signing him in a £72million deal from Atalanta last summer.

But Hojlund can’t continue doing it alone, and his latest injury setback served as a reminder that Ten Hag must find a way to balance the game time of such a young player.

Martial is set to leave United on a free transfer once his contract expires in June, leaving Hojlund as the club’s sole natural striker.

Marcus Rashford is capable of filling in centrally but prefers to operate on the left. Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho continues to improve but is yet to consistently add goals to his game. Antony has yet to convince at all.

So, Ten Hag will delve into the striker market again this summer, either for another young striker to act as Hojlund’s cover or a more experienced option to challenge the Denmark international and aid his development.

Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney will undoubtedly stand among those links with moves to Old Trafford in the coming months.

But Youssouph Cheikh Sylla – who plays for Perugia in the third tier of Italian football – has shot his shot at publicly declaring his dream to play for United one day.

“In football, I want to go as high as possible,” Sylla explained during an interview with Quotidiano Sportivo.

“I would like to play for Manchester United one day. You always have to believe in dreams because they help you make sacrifices.”

Sylla joined Perugia from Vis Pesaro for around £60,000 in January and has registered eight goals and four assists in all competitions this term.

The 26-year-old is unlikely to realise his dream of representing United, with INEOS set to target a candidate of a similar quality, if not more established than Hojlund, this summer.

But Sylla will have learned from recent examples in Odion Ighalo and Wout Weghorst that hard work can get you a long way in football.
