Man Utd decide on Dan Ashworth partner as third Premier League raid set ‘this week’ | Football | Sport

The Red Devils had been expected to pursue a head of recruitment to join new chief executive Omar Berrada and leading sporting director candidate Dan Ashworth at Old Trafford.

Paul Mitchell, Julian Ward, Michael Edwards and Andrea Berta have been among the names linked with the role in recent months.

According to The Independent, Freedman has emerged as the preferred option, having impressed INEOS with his work as sporting director at Selhurst Park.

It’s claimed that Palace expect an official approach this week, which could spell the end of the 49-year-old’s seven years at the club.

The Eagles have rarely stood in the way of staff or players if they decide to progress their careers, and it will likely be no different for Freedman.

They will reportedly offer him a new contract in south London to hand a final ultimatum. However, the opportunity to help spearhead United’s new era is an attractive proposition.

INEOS are said to view Freedman as the ideal character to enter the team they are building in M16, although they have identified alternative options if he remains at Palace.

His work to help the club build an exciting young squad with some of the Premier League’s most promising talents has been viewed as particularly impressive.

The report adds that United believe Freedman could solve the potential issue of having to wait for Ashworth to serve his gardening leave after leaving Newcastle United.

The Magpies reportedly demanded £20million in compensation to allow him to join United immediately, meaning Ratcliffe and Co. could face waiting until 2025 to seal his services.

Berrada is also serving a period of gardening leave after being poached from rivals Manchester City, where he served as the City Football Group’s chief football operations officer.

Ratcliffe has praised the Etihad Stadium outfit for hassle-free negotiations, though, and Berrada is expected to officially start as CEO this summer.

Freedman could act as the club’s sporting director during a crucial summer transfer window until Ashworth receives the all-clear to get started.

His arrival would add further substance to reports claiming United are preparing to make Palace winger Michael Olise one of their first signings under the INEOS banner.
