Man Utd snubbed by transfer target just weeks after making their interest known to player | Football | Sport

Manchester United face getting snubbed by reported summer transfer window Mathys Tel, who is reportedly on the verge of agreeing a new contract with Bayern Munich. The Red Devils emerged as concrete suitors last month, but Tel looks set to end any transfer saga before it starts by committing his future to Bayern.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to oversee the capture of a new striker in his first summer in charge of United’s football operations.

Regardless of whether Erik ten Hag continues as manager or INEOS make their own appointment, Rasmus Hojlund is in dire need of striker support.

Anthony Martial will leave Old Trafford as a free agent once his contract expires at the end of June, leaving Hojlund as the club’s sole natural senior striker.

In recent weeks, Tel surfaced as a potential target, with United likely starting to weigh up a recruitment strategy as INEOS form their new-look department, helmed by chief executive Omar Berrada.

However, the 18-year-old frontman looks set to pour cold water over transfer talk by penning a new long-term deal at Bayern.

According to Sky Germany, Tel is primed to extend his current deal until the summer of 2029 following crunch talks with club bosses.

It was previously claimed that he was uncertain of his future at the Allianz Arena and that he sought assurances of his role going forward.

Tel now appears to have received backing from Bayern, who were keen to tie down one of Europe’s most promising forwards.

The report claims that directors Christoph Freund and Max Eberl drew out a clear pathway to becoming a crucial first-team player, taking the prospect of a summer exit off the table.

Tel is expected to sign his new contract today, and he is said to be keen to become a legend at Bayern, where he joined from Rennes in 2022 for around £24million.

He has made 59 appearances since the start of last season but has been deprived of regular starts under Thomas Tuchel, registering 13 goals and four assists.

The France U21 international has scored seven goals and provided all four of his assists in 862 minutes of football this term, averaging a direct contribution every 78 minutes.

His decision to commit his allegiance to Bayern takes him off the table for United and other attracted parties ahead of a busy summer transfer period.

The Red Devils will have alternative options, some already on the shortlist and others likely to be brought forward by the club’s incoming hires.
