Man Utd news: Antony’s true ‘feelings’ on Erik ten Hag treatment as £85m flop frozen out | Football | Sport

Manchester United outcast Antony has reportedly accepted that he is not playing well enough to warrant a starting spot at Old Trafford. Manager Erik ten Hag, who worked with the Brazilian at Ajax, has brutally frozen him out since the turn of the year as his dismal individual season continues.

Much was expected of Antony following an £85million move in 2022 that created a reunion with Ten Hag, who brought the best out of him in the Netherlands. He immediately repaid the Dutchman’s faith by becoming the first United player to score in each of their first three Premier League matches.

It slid gradually downhill from there, however, and Ten Hag has called on the likes of Omari Forson and Amad Diallo before turning to Antony in recent weeks. The 24-year-old has not started a first-team match in over two months.

According to The Athletic, Antony has been informed that the reason for his lack of game time is down to sub-par performances, which the player ‘accepts’ have not been good enough.

Antony’s season has been interrupted by off-field issues, and Ten Hag believes they have taken a personal toll on the wide man, who he feels needs to rediscover his ‘bravery’ on the ball. “One of the big skills from Antony is that he’s very brave,” he said. “So he has to find that back and it’s up to him.”

Members of Antony’s entourage reportedly agree with Ten Hag’s verdict. The out-of-form star, who is the second-most-expensive signing in United’s history, is understood to be intent on staying at Old Trafford and fighting for his place.

He once again had to make do with a spot on the bench in the 2-0 win at home to Everton on Saturday, eventually emerging as an 83rd-minute substitute for Alejandro Garnacho.

Antony was a sensation during his two-season spell at Ajax, netting 25 goals in 82 appearances while dazzling supporters with his extravagant skills and powerful shots from distance.
