Defender Man Utd had ‘advanced talks’ with has more goal involvements than Bruno Fernandes | Football | Sport

Jeremie Frimpong, who was a target for Manchester United last summer, has more goal involvements than Bruno Fernandes this season despite playing at right wing-back for Bayer Leverkusen. Frimpong has been a mainstay in Xabi Alonso’s side on their way to a 10-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table without losing a single game.

Frimpong has certainly been playing his part in Leverkusen’s incredible season, with the 23-year-old scoring 10 goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions. His influence at wing-back has been nothing short of sensational and puts Fernandes to shame despite the United ace playing in a much more advanced position.

The Portuguese midfielder has only chipped in with nine goals and eight assists for the Red Devils, who could benefit from a player like Frimpong to increase their output in front of goal. They nearly signed him before the start of the season but ended up missing out before he penned a new long-term deal with Leverkusen in October.

United were in ‘advanced talks’ over a move for Frimpong back in May, according to Bild, with a deal thought to have been ‘likely’ at that point in time. Erik ten Hag was said to have been eager to sign a new right-back but the Red Devils failed to bring one to Old Trafford before the end of the summer window.

There is still a chance that Frimpong could depart Leverkusen next summer, though, with a stipulation in his new contract allowing him to leave for a relatively modest fee. Fabrizio Romano has reported that a £34.2m release clause will only be active until the start of next season, giving interested clubs a few months to prise him away at that price.

Bayern Munich and Liverpool have also been linked with a potential move for Frimpong, with United likely to face stiff competition if they decide to pursue a summer move. The player himself recently hinted that he would be open to joining Liverpool, telling Ziggo Sport last month: “Great club with history, that would be great. Who knows what the future will bring?”

In another interview with Marca, Frimpong hinted at an interest in returning to Manchester City after coming through their academy ranks as a youngster. He said: “It would be great, but I don’t know. They have just won the Champions League and are the best team in the world. In the future we will see.”

United have been crying out for a new right-back for some time and it seems that Frimpong would be the perfect fit at Old Trafford next season. However, it remains to be seen if the Red Devils will end up kicking themselves over their failure to sign him a year ago, with plenty of other top clubs thought to be in the running ahead of the summer.
