Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp confirms three new injury problems after Man Utd loss | Football | Sport

Jurgen Klopp revealed that Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez all picked up knocks during Liverpool’s dramatic FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester United. The Red Devils left it late to claim a thrilling 4-3 victory over their Merseyside rivals, with Amad Diallo’s winner in the final minute of extra time sending Liverpool out of the competition.

Liverpool led twice but were pegged back on each occasion, with Harvey Elliott scoring what he thought was the decisive goal in extra-time before United hit back again. The timing of Amad’s winner meant that Liverpool did not have an opportunity to force a penalty shoot-out, leaving the 9,000 travelling fans heartbroken at the final whistle.

Speaking in his post-match interview with ITV Sport, Klopp revealed that Liverpool had suffered three new injuries during the game with Diaz, Gakpo and Nunez the players in question.

“Now the boys go on international duty, we hope they come back healthy,” said the Reds boss. “Lucho [Diaz] felt his groin, Darwin hamstring. Cody twisted his ankle. They play again in four or five days, it’s crazy. Hopefully we will finish the season in style. I really feel for our people.”

Klopp went on to insist that he could not fault the effort of his players in spite of the result, with the Reds falling just short despite being in control for large parts of the match.

“United had a really good start in the game, we didn’t,” he said. “We used the time and adapted well. We were outstanding but we had to finish the game off and we didn’t. If you’re only one goal up it’s clear your opponent is there. We lose it in the end. I cannot ask for more.

“The boys gave everything. Our decision making was not great [but] you have to accept the result. They deserve to go to the next round. It was a period in the second half when we should have finished it but we didn’t and we know they could come back.

“I think my boys showed incredible character again. Super effort again. Everybody showed it. You cannot compare our season to United’s with the amount of games. It’s fine, we deal with it.

“How could I doubt the character of my boys? I don’t. We use the situation and it’s game over. We didn’t use it and they ran through. I’m still proud of what I saw today. They boys have to recover and we will go for everything after the international break.”

The result saw Liverpool’s hopes of winning both domestic cups go up in smoke following their Carabao Cup final triumph over Chelsea last month. They will be desperate to bounce back at the very next opportunity, with the Reds set to host Brighton in their first Premier League game after the international break.
