Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold as they look to sign a long-term replacement for Daniel Carvajal.

Carvajal has been Los Blancos’ first-choice right-back for a decade and even Achraf Hakimi was unable to dislodge him in the starting XI at the Santiago Bernabeu; however, he is now 32 years old and a contingency plan is needed for when his form drops off.

Chelsea right-back Reece James has previously been linked as a key target for Real Madrid, but the Englishman cannot be relied upon from a fitness perspective and having been named club captain at Stamford Bridge, he is unlikely to leave his boyhood club.

As a result, Real Madrid have moved on from the Blues star and are now targeting a move for Alexander-Arnold, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer expert posted on X (formerly known as Twitter): “Real Madrid are monitoring Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation at Liverpool.

Current deal expires in June ’25 with no talks underway as of now. Liverpool have not indicated any desire to sell at this stage.

“There’s no indication of the player’s views so far.”

So, any potential deal is far from advanced, but it is clear that Real Madrid view Alexander-Arnold as a potential answer to their right-back problem.

How Real Madrid could line up with Trent Alexander-Arnold

If Alexander-Arnold does join Real in the future, however, he would form a small part of a crazy starting XI.

Thibaut Courtois will remain in between the sticks, while Alexander-Arnold would naturally slot in at right-back.

Lille wonderkid Leny Yoro and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies have both been named as key transfer targets ahead of the summer window and Real Madrid are typically successful whenever they seriously pursue a player.

Eder Militao will accompany Yoro, Davies and Alexander-Arnold at the back.

In midfield, Carlo Ancelotti would likely stick with his tried and tested diamond system, with Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga providing protection for Jude Bellingham.

Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe would then form a formidable front two, and they would feast on Alexander-Arnold through-balls from deep.
