Manchester United will have to pay considerably more than £40million to secure the services of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window, sources have revealed to FootballTransfers.

The Midlands club will not come to the table if the Red Devils began negotiations at such a price, wanting significantly more for the player who’s contracted at Molineux until 2028.

We are told that the future of Pedro Neto will also play a part – should the winger leave in the summer for £60m, Wolves will have more leverage in dealing with bids for Gomes. FootballTransfers has previously reported that Man City lead the way for the Portugal international, who Arsenal and Liverpool also appreciate.

The 23-year-old is enjoying an excellent campaign and it’s been reported by the national press that Man Utd scouts have watched over the player on several occasions this term, most recently in Wolves’ 2-1 win over Fulham earlier this month. But we understand that the Red Devils are yet to make a move towards buying the player.

Gomes arrived from Flamengo for £15m during 2023 winter transfer window, taking over from Ruben Neves in the middle of the park.

Who are Man Utd’s other targets?

As FootballTransfers reported yesterday, Man Utd have identified Everton’s Amadou Onana as a potential signing for the midfield amid uncertainty around Casemiro’s future.

In Erik ten Hag’s second season leading the Premier League giants, they’ve encountered notable challenges. This has prompted a shift in focus towards bolstering the defensive line and holding midfield position.

Meanwhile, Everton are grappling with financial constraints and face the likelihood of parting ways with key players. Among them, Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite stand out as the club’s most prized assets, with Man Utd keen on both players.

Although primary attention is on the backline at Old Trafford, FootballTransfers understands loanee Sofyan Ambrabat is poised to return to Fiorentina at the end of the season and a potential departure of Casemiro seems increasingly likely, given the veteran’s large wages and downturn in form.

Alongside their pursuit of Onana, Man Utd are eager to trigger Michael Olise’s £60 million release clause in the summer.
