Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool, Real Madrid

Liverpool are yet to start talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold over a new contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds right-back has been in the news lately after it was revealed last week that Real Madrid are keeping close tabs on his contract situation. Despite being one of Liverpool’s key players, the 25-year-old only has a little over a year left on his deal.

With his contract up in 2025, Real Madrid are smelling a potential opportunity to pounce. Similarly to their pursuit of Alphonso Davies, who is also out of contract next year, Los Blancos are prepared to play the long game if they have to.

Thus far there have been no suggestions that they would be prepared to follow the same formula as with Davies. While Real are expected to make an offer for the Canadian this summer and only wait another year if Bayern’s demands prove unreasonable, it seems unlikely that they will also table a bid for Alexander-Arnold given that they are pursuing Kylian Mbappe as well.

However, even with no immediate approach forthcoming, Alexander-Arnold’s contract uncertainty and Real Madrid’s attraction to the player are a potential problem for Liverpool, but the Anfield club are yet to do anything to change the situation, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Romano on Alexander-Arnold

Speaking to CaughtOffside, Romano revealed that Liverpool are yet to open talks with their vice-captain’s camp over a new deal. “Alexander-Arnold is a crucial player for Liverpool and there is a fantastic relationship between the player, the city and the club,” he said.

“I’m sure Liverpool will try to keep the player at the club but now, from what I am told, Real Madrid have a concrete interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold. They are monitoring the situation and at the moment, there is no direct contact with his agent or with the player as it is still too early.”

“Real Madrid are closely following the situation so let’s see the next steps. From what I am hearing, there are no negotiations between Liverpool and Trent to extend his contract so that’s why Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on the situation.”
