Jesper Fredberg's search for a Zeno Debast replacement continues

Central defender Matte Smets follows in the footsteps of Thorsten Fink and Jarne Steuckers by leaving Saint-Trond for Racing Genk

Staying in familiar Limburg, 20-year-old Matte Smets, who had attracted interest from both Belgian and foreign clubs, has opted to join Genk, where he will reunite with two familiar faces: Thorsten Fink and Jarne Steuckers. This is a blow for Saint-Trond, who have now lost a third key player to their local rivals. It is also a setback for Anderlecht and Jesper Fredberg. The Mauves had seen Matte Smets as an ideal replacement for Zeno Debast, who will be playing for Sporting Portugal next season. RSCA will therefore continue to scour the market.

Matte Smets, who had a brilliant season with the Canaries, will sign a four-year contract with Genk, who are paying €2.25 million to activate the release clause of a player who has already spent eight years at the club (between 2010 and 2018). Considered a great talent, Smets has already finished 28th in the annual Tuttosport Golden Boy rankings. Domenico Tedesco has also mentioned his name.
