Polish referee Szymon Marciniak will be in charge of the match between the Red Devils and Romania, Belgium’s second match at Euro 2024. UEFA has appointed the man in black for the Group E clash scheduled for Saturday at 9pm in Cologne.
Szymon Marciniak, 43, has officiated several high-profile matches during his career. He has notably whistled the 2022-2023 Champions League final, the 2022 World Cup final and, more recently, the second leg of the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Szymon Marciniak has officiated four Red Devils matches since 2015. The first three were friendlies: against Italy in 2015 (3-1 win), in the Netherlands in 2016 (1-1) and in Russia in 2017 (3-3).
The Pole had also whistled the 2018 World Cup qualifier in Greece (1-2 win) in 2017.
Refereeing was in the spotlight during Belgium’s opening Euro loss to Slovakia (0-1). The Red Devils were denied an equaliser twice after VAR intervention from Turkey’s Halil Umut Meler.
