Alexander Blessin set to leave Union Saint-Gilloise

It appears that Union SG will have to look for a new coach for the third year in a row. On Sunday, it was announced that Sankt Pauli were trying to lure Alexander Blessin away. And the German is very much interested in an adventure in his own country.

About a year ago, Blessin was appointed as a successor to Karel Geraerts. He had previously done good work at the helm of Ostend. He then moved to Genoa CFC, where he did not experience great success. But Union made a good choice in appointing him.

Blessin continued the work of his two predecessors and led his team to fight for the title again. In the end, the team finished in second place. Under his reign, Union also won the Belgian Cup and again impressed on the European stage.

Moving closer to his family

The German was even elected “coach of the season” in the Jupiler Pro League. But today, he seems to be on his way out. At Sankt Pauli, Blessin will therefore have an excellent opportunity to prove himself in the Bundesliga. This could be a good springboard for the rest of his career.

The family situation also plays an important role. A year ago, his wife Charlotte became partially paralyzed after a spinal cord infarction. She has remained in Stuttgart with their three daughters for their rehabilitation, while Blessin has remained in Brussels. Today, he will be able to move closer to his family.

Negotiations underway

According to Het Nieuwsblad, Blessin intends to respond to the interest of the Bundesliga club. He is said to have already had advanced discussions with Sankt Pauli, of which he would have informed Union in advance. The German club would also be willing to pay the buyout clause in full, which is between 700,000 and one million euros. Contacts are also said to be underway on this matter.
