Lukaku’s Return to Anderlecht: A Damp Squib?

As he continues his quest to score his first (valid) goal at the European Championships, speculation about Romelu Lukaku’s future is rife. It is certain that he will leave Chelsea and that he wants to return to Anderlecht, his boyhood club, one day. Does two plus two equal four?

According to Vinnie Frans, that might just be the case. Lukaku’s childhood friend was interviewed by De Morgen about the plans of Belgium’s all-time leading goalscorer, who recently revealed that his return to the Lotto Park “will happen sooner than people think.”

Anderlecht or Saudi Arabia

Lukaku added that he missed his family and friends, which Frans also confirmed. According to him, the 31-year-old striker, on loan to AS Roma last season, yearns for peace and quiet in his familiar surroundings. 15 years of competing in the professional circuit are therefore starting to take their toll.

“Either he returns to Anderlecht or he goes to Saudi Arabia. I think it will be one of the two,” Frans said. So who knows, maybe Lukaku will return to the Mauve and White 13 years after his departure, where his eldest son Romeo is already studying.

Chelsea Could Disagree

Unless Anderlecht are outsmarted by the wealthy sheikhs as in the case of Koen Casteels? Lukaku has also indicated that he is not opposed to a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia where he could undoubtedly earn a lot more.

But the problem could come from Chelsea, who are demanding a significant sum for our compatriot. Anderlecht, unlike the Arabs, will not be able to spend that much money anyway. The chances of seeing him return this summer therefore seem very slim, but you never know.
