Official: Ex-Antwerp and Eupen goalkeeper to replace Gaëtan Coucke at Mechelen

Gaëtan Coucke has not extended his contract with Mechelen. KV was therefore on the lookout for his successor.

Like Thibaut Courtois, Koen Casteels, Maarten Vandevoordt, Nordin Jackers and Tobe Leysen, Gaëtan Coucke is one of the many goalkeepers who have come through the Genk academy, highlighting the work of trainer Guy Martens.

Since leaving Racing for Mechelen in 2020, the goalkeeper has become a benchmark in the Pro League. But he did not extend his contract at KV and will therefore be one of the good deals to be had this summer.

While waiting for him to find a new club, Mechelen’s management has already officialised the arrival of his successor. This is Ortwin De Wolf, who joined Zulte Waregem from Antwerp just six months ago.

De Wolf was trained at Lokeren before joining Eupen in 2019. The 27-year-old goalkeeper played 41 times for the Pandas before signing for Antwerp to become Jean Butez’s understudy.

He is the favourite to become Mechelen’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Yannick Thoelen, who is entering the final year of his contract at the club.
