Could a top English club be the answer to Antwerp’s financial woes?

Antwerp are in the midst of pre-season and a new cycle, having already brought in new players, but are expected to see many more depart.

Antwerp are set to experience an exodus of their star players this summer. Indeed, president Paul Gheysens has turned off the spending tap for the time being, and the club is financially strapped after two seasons of heavy spending.

The club still wants to be a force to be reckoned with and challenge for the top honours this season, but that will be difficult without spending. However, CEO Sven Jaecques has been clear on the matter, confirming that a number of their key players are attracting interest from abroad.

The hot prospects are Mandela Keita, Michel-Ange Balikwisha and George Ilenikhena. According to Jaecques, one or two outgoing transfers seem likely but are also necessary to boost the coffers of Matricule 1.

Ajax and… Manchester United

As mentioned, Ajax are closely following the player. However, the Amsterdam club is also facing financial problems and cannot therefore afford a large sum, which is precisely what Antwerp needs. It remains to be seen whether the contacts between Marc Overmars and his former club are still good.

Interest from Manchester United was also cited during the season, and the Red Devils will have no problem paying the asking price directly from Antwerp.
