What about Jan Vertonghen’s future? A decision is expected in the coming days, but Jesper Fredberg cannot afford to stand still.
Jan Vertonghen has experienced a real emotional rollercoaster in recent weeks. First there was the injury that made him doubt his footballing future, then the feeling that everything would be alright after all following qualification, and finally the elimination with that own goal. All of this is not making his decision any easier.
So his definitive answer regarding not only the Red Devils (even though there are few doubts about his international retirement) but especially Anderlecht is awaited. But Jesper Fredberg doesn’t have time: RSCA is going on a training camp next week.
The Sporting’s CEO Sports is therefore working on several files. One of them leads to Mexican centre-back Jesús Orozco Chiquete. Direct competition for Vertonghen therefore, who should cost six million.
So Orozco wouldn’t be there to warm the bench, but with the busy schedule Anderlecht will have next season, it certainly won’t be superfluous. Vertonghen has already resigned himself to a role where he won’t play every game if he continues, and Zeno Debast is also leaving.
Orozco’s transfer should therefore be seen independently of Vertonghen’s future. However, Fredberg seems determined to strengthen the centre-back position, as he cannot afford to wait. And when someone hesitates for so long, is that a good sign?
