Club Brugge have finally secured their first win of the season. Nicky Hayen’s men claimed a 1-0 victory over Antwerp.

Club Brugge faced Antwerp at the Jan Breydelstadion on Sunday. In a fairly balanced match, the Blue and Black managed to secure the win thanks to a penalty.

First half The first half was lively with chances at both ends. Club Brugge started the match with intensity, launching attacks from the first few minutes. Gustaf Nilsson almost opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a powerful header from an excellent pass, but the ball was deflected by Senne Lammens. Nilsson had two more chances to score in the first half, but his attempts lacked precision.

Simon Mignolet was also called into action several times, making saves from Tjaronn Chery and Gyrano Kerk, as well as a shot from Vincent Janssen which he parried away perfectly.

Just before the break, new signing Chrístos Tzólis had a great chance to score after a pass from Hans Vanaken, but Zeno Van den Bosch made a crucial intervention to prevent the goal.

Second half

The second half started slowly, with little rhythm. Both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances. The match was quite low on intensity.

Antwerp showed a bit more initiative in the middle of the second half. Anthony Valencia and Tjaronn Chery had opportunities but failed to hit the target.

In the 79th minute, Club Brugge were awarded a penalty after Senne Lammens handled the ball in front of Maxim De Cuyper. Roméo Vermant then recovered the ball and was fouled by Mahamadou Doumbia, who was lucky not to receive a second yellow card. Gustaf Nilsson then converted the penalty, scoring his first goal for the Blue and Black.

Then, in the 87th minute, Denis Odoi was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Nilsson. This put the Antwerp side in even more difficulty.

In the standings, Brugge climb to 10th place with 4 points from 12 possible. Antwerp, on the other hand, remain stuck in 6th place with 6 points from 12.
