This weekend saw the German Super Cup final, which was marked by the performances of former Pro League players.
Saturday’s Super Cup match between Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart at the BayArena featured several former players from our beloved Pro League.
Victor Boniface, formerly of Union Saint-Gilloise, opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a header following a cross from Edmond Tapsoba. However, the reigning champions’ lead was short-lived. Enzo Millot equalised just four minutes later with a superb finish from Maximilian Mittelstädt’s cross into the box.
A Unionist replies to another
Martin Terrier’s red card, for a reckless challenge on Ermedin Demirovic’s shin in the 37th minute, complicated matters for Bayer Leverkusen. This incident also led to the substitution of former Belgian league star Victor Boniface, who was replaced by Jonathan Tah.
It wasn’t until the 63rd minute that another former Union Saint-Gilloise forward, Deniz Undav, scored his first goal of the season for Stuttgart to give his team the lead. Having just come on as a substitute, the German headed home a perfect cross from Frans Kratzig.
Just as Sebastian Hoeness’s men thought they were heading towards victory and their second German Cup in history, Patrik Schick equalised in the 88th minute. The two teams eventually had to settle the match via a penalty shootout, which Bayer Leverkusen won 4-3.
