In Mouscron, professional football is a thing of the past, and the heated derbies at the Canonnier stadium are now part of history.
These days, the Hurlus play in the provincial leagues, where the atmosphere is generally less tense. However, while the match in Courcelles was going smoothly both on and off the pitch, Charleroi hooligans stormed the stadium, reports La Dernière Heure.
“Unbelievable in the first provincial division”
“Hooded hooligans armed with iron bars from the Sporting de Charleroi’s hard-core group, the Storm Ultras, burst in to settle a score with the Mouscron hard-core. This led to clashes on the pitch and a great deal of confusion, requiring a large police presence,” the report states.
Panic spread among many of the supporters present, who sought refuge on the pitch. Once calm was restored, the referee decided to abandon the match.
“It’s incredible to see hooded figures arriving in the first provincial division to fight with supporters, there are no words. My players were wondering what was going on. I also want to thank the people of Courcelles, including their coach who told us there were two minutes left and that we should leave it at that,” said Mouscron coach Julian Depoorter.
